Halangoda trophy for Antonians

by S. M. Jiffry Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr.

St. Anthony's became the first winners of the John Halangoda memorial trophy when they snatched an exciting first innings win over Trinity in their 89th 'Battle of the Blues' concluded at the Asgiriya Stadium yesterday.

The Trinitians declared at their overnight score of 179 for 9 thus throwing the game open.

Anthonian had some early scares when they lost four early wickets for 38. Their skipper Pramodh Fernando with Shameer Munas shared a fifth-wicket stand of 45 which lifted the Antonian hopes. Fernando hit 6 fours in his knock of 36 off 99 deliveries while Muras had 4 four off 105 balls in his knock of 42.

But the Antonians struggled on at 145 for 8 before Sameera Weerabahu in a 85-ball knock of 30 not out pulled the game in favour of the Antonians. He hit 6 fours and a six.
