Unbeaten century by Mathew

by Leslie Fernando

A career best unbeaten century (102) by Josephian vice captain and Sri Lanka under-19 captain to Pakistan, Angelo Mathew, who was involved in two good stands (112 runs for the 5th-wicket with Roshane Silve and 72 for the 6th-wicket with Ranesh Perera) highlighted the final day's play in the 71st annual Josephian-Peterite cricket encounter which ended in a draw at the Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday. Set a victory target of 210 off 31 overs, Peterites made 120 for 1.

Joes continuing their overnight total of 12 for 1 erased off the deficit of 94 losing Ruwantha Fernandopulle (14), Dimuth Karunaratne (45 with 9 fours) Hashan Gunatilleke (14) and Danuka Hettiarachchi (14). Then followed the best batting for Joes when Angelo Mathew and Roshane Silva batted with authority.

Silva hit his twin fifty in the match (58 with 7 fours).

Mathew's fine century contained 8 fours and 2 sixes, facing 147 balls in 217 minutes. He became the 11th Josephian to score a ton in a big match.

Peterite chasing a victory target of 219 runs in 31 overs, were 129 for I with skipper Prajeev Jansz hitting his second half century (55 n.o. with 5 fours) and Shanka Wickremasekera unbeaten on 56 with 4 fours and one six.
