NY violence ebbs but accidents rise

by Rashomi Silva

Accidents over violence and home misadventures during the festive season are on the decline whereas there is a slight increase in traffic accidents during last four to five years, according to Colombo National Hospital statistics (CNH).

A spokesperson for the Accident ward of the CNH said 696 patients came for treatment this year as against 756 last year, which showed a decrease in this year's figures. This trend had occurred from the latter part of 2000," he said.

"But the cause for concern is that there were more road accidents this year when compared with the last four to five years. Out of five deaths reported this year during the festive season at the CNH, three were fatal road accidents," Anil Jayasinghe of the Accident Ward said. This year, 245 patients had received in-patient treatment due to traffic accidents, as compared with last year's 225. "The trend of road accidents was on the decline from 2000 but it has again gone up from last year," Jayasinghe said.
