Huge haul of hooch

Police have declared war on illicit hooch dens scattered along the coastal towns of Wattala, Negombo, Ja-Ela, Kandana, Gampaha and in other adjacent areas during the festive season, to minimise crime and violence, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando told the Sunday Observer.

He said several hooch dens in those areas have been raided which has resulted in a large quantity of illicit liquor being seized during the past few days. Small quantities of drugs have also been detected in these raids.

All these have resulted in less crime being reported from Colombo and in the suburban areas during the festive season.

He said around 1200 policemen from Wattala, Kandana, Ja-Ela, Negombo police stations have been detailed to combat the illicit liquor menace. (JJ)
