Retired RVDB employees given houses The employees of River Valley Development Board (RVDB) who were retired in 1990 with the UNP regime decision to close the RVDB received deeds of their official quarters in their own names. River Basin Development and Rajarata Development Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara told the Sunday Observer that it was a longstanding request from former RVDB employees to be given official ownership of their quarters and requested by previous governments. On the request of Minister Maithripala Sirisena, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had agreed to this offer and according to 221 houses at Udawalawe, Suriyawewa and Agunakolapelessa areas were officially handed over to the residents who were RVDB employees at a function held at Mahaweli Auditorium in Embilipitiya. RVDB was originally Gal Oya Development Board (GODB) set up to construct the Inginiyagala Irrigation Project in 1948. It was renamed River Valley Development Board in 1965 and it had engaged in a number of the country's irrigation projects. Every housing unit which was handed over to the RVDB employees had been located on a land area of 25 perches. Deputy Minister Jayasekera further added that the UPFA Government would engage in more people oriented projects like this. (DPL) |
