Ranil should be ousted - Adhikari

Former senior UNP minister A.M.S. Adhikari reiterated that his campaign to oust Ranil Wickremesinghe from the party leadership would be continued at a fresh pace. In an interview with the `Sunday Observer' he said that the Anti-Ranil UNP Organisation would begin from Anuradhapura district and taken islandwide till Wickremesignhe steps down from the leadership.

According to the former Minister he had first been elected a member of a Local Government body in the 1950s and had secured a seat at the Parliamentary election in 1965.

He was also elected UNP member for Kalawewa at the 1974 by-elections at a time Wickremesinghe was not even an MP or an organiser of the UNP.

He also said that he would never leave the UNP but continue his agitational campaign while assisting President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as well as the United People's Freedom Alliance Government to proceed with their development oriented plans.

He also claimed that his party can never regain power under the present leadership and the party was deteriorating.

"Today, Wickremesinghe has not allowed at least a senior Minister to express his views freely. Therefore, no one wants to point out short-comings.

Everyone knows what happened to me. When I tried to keep him on the right track he even rejected my nomination in 2001", Adhikari added. "Compared to Ranil, Chandrika is a good leader. Her government within several months in power has provided employment opportunities for over 40,000 youth. I would assist the President even in stages".

When queried whether he expects some privileges from the Freedom Alliance Government Adhikari said that both he and his wife had had enough in politics and expects nothing from it but want to take the side of the truth.
