Solheim due here today by Ranga Jayasuriya Special Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim is due here today for shuttle diplomacy between the Government and the LTTE to formulate a joint mechanism for the post-tsunami relief and reconstruction in the North-East. Solheim arriving for the fourth time this year is expected to meet President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and key Government Ministers and the Peace Secretariat Chief Dr. Jayantha Danapala. He will visit Kilinochchi for talks with the LTTE leadership. The LTTE political chief S.P. Thamilselvan and peace secretariat chief S. Pulidevan now touring Europe are expected to return to the Wanni for discussions with the Norwegian peace envoy. "Discussions will centre on the joint mechanism. We are keen to see an early agreement," a spokeswoman for the Norwegian Embassy told the Sunday Observer. Solheim's visit, which the spokeswoman described as "routine" comes in the wake of President Kumaratunga's call for a joint mechanism with the LTTE, saying it would set the stage for a final solution. Earlier, the Peace Secretariat which negotiated with its LTTE counterpart on the formulation of the joint mechanism, forwarded a "Norwegian worded" draft proposal on the joint structure to the Government for its final decision. |
