Aravinda Premadasa fastest timing by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent at Radella Aravinda Premadasa clocked the fastest timing of the day by getting 33.79 seconds but Rohan de Silva's Course record of 31.85 seconds stood unshattered at the Annual Radella Speed Hill Climb organised by the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers & Riders (SLARDAR) for Auto Finish SLARDAR Championship 2005 held at the Radella Short Cut at Radella. The day really belonged to Aravinda Premadasa as he exploited the conditions with some superb driving which kept the holiday crowd on their toes. Aravinda Premadasa driving a Mitsubishi Evo 6 timed 34.27 seconds in his first run which shattered his own existing record of 34.99 seconds. In his second run which was one of the last few runs for the day he improved on this by timing 33.79 seconds. But the course record of 31.85 seconds established by formula expert Rohan de Silva a few years ago remained unshaken and this year there were no events for formula cars, a change from tradition by the organisers who have been conducting events for formula cars from the very inception of this hill climb in the early eighties in which drivers like Rodney Mason. Jeffrey Mason, Rohan de Silva, Romani de Silva, Suranjith Premadasa and Rizvi Farouk have excelled. Four records in the motor cycles category and two in the motor cars category were lowered in this hill climb which was conducted well and the events being run to schedule. A notable feature was that Rohan de Silva having no opportunity to run in the event for formula cars decided to bury the hatchet and participated in the Modified cars event between 1050 cc and 1400 cc and could not secure a place. The records to go was by Dhammika Peiris who timed 45.49 seconds to lower his own record for Group SI-N Ford Laser/Mazda cars upto 1500 cc to erase his own record of 46.2 seconds. Records which were lowered in the mobikes category were by Shiran Samuel, Pasindu Peiris, teenager Gayan Sandaruwan and Nalin Perera. |
