61 killed in Bangladesh factory collapse, 100 still missing

DHAKA, Saturday (AFP) Rescuers pulled another seven bodies from the rubble of a collapsed factory in Bangladesh, bringing the death toll to 61 with around 100 still missing, officials said Saturday. An army spokesman said firefighters and troops retrieved the decomposed bodies, but some 100 people were still missing.

"We expect to find more bodies in the debris today as already cranes have cleared concrete slabs of at least four floors," said fire department assistant director Nurul Islam.

The illegally-constructed nine-storey building housing Spectrum Sweater and Knitting Industries at Palash Bari, 30 kilometres (18 miles) northwest of the capital, was packed with night-shift workers when it collapsed early Monday.

Rescuers have abandoned hope of finding anyone alive.

"It is impossible to stay alive under the rubble for six days running," Islam said.
