Monks is aware of the fact that Edward Leeford, his father is a friend of Mr. Brownlow.
He reminds Monks about the Will left by Monks' father and his illegitimate affair with Agnes. He reminds Monks of the villainous way in which Monks destroys the only proof of Oliver's birth and his parentage. Mr. Brownlow tells Monks, that Nancy's dreadful corpse had been discovered by her friend Bet, in the room where Sykes had murdered her." Police are after Sykes, who with his record of crime and violence is the chief suspect. Monks agrees to tell the truth and requests Mr. Brownlow not to "give him up." Mr. Brownlow agrees and he is only too eager to avenge the death of the poor murdered girl, Nancy, who was a true friend to Oliver. Chapter 16 The end of Sykes Fagin is taken at 2 o'clock in the afternoon by Officers of the Law and is to be hanged for all the crimes he has committed. Charley Bates starts attacking Sykes for murdering Nancy. Sykes locks Charley up in a room. Then Sykes starts yelling to the crowd gathered near the house roaring at the sight of Sykes, who climbs the roof with the aid of a rope. He falls off the roof and drops like a stone, thirtyfive feet below, with his open knife still in his hand. With a dismal howl his dog jumps on the deadman's shoulders and dies on the spot, thus paying for all the crimes committed by him. Chapter 17 The Explanation Two days later Oliver, Mrs. Maylie, Rose and Dr. Losberne are approaching the town of Oliver's birth. Mr. Brownlow brings Monks to the scene and explains to Monks that Oliver is his half brother, the son of Monks' father. Monks unfolds the secret of the letter by Edward Leeford. Containing the secret of Oliver's mother's connection to Leeford and about the locket and ring he had given to Oliver's mother. The will had left Monks and his mother each, eight hundred pounds a year. The rest is to be divided into two equal parts. One for Agnes Flemming and the other to their child. But if it is a boy, he can have the money only if he has not stained his name. Monks unfolds the true story of Rose, a sister of Agnes'. She i s picked by Mrs. Maylie from some poor cottagers who had brought her up as their own child. Oliver's relationship to Rose brings unexpected joy to everyone. Chapter 18 The Result Fagin is brought to justice and sentenced to death by public hanging. Fagin unfolds the secret of Oliver's identity for which Monks has proof - the letter from his father to his mother - This letter is kept in a hole in the chimney in the room where Oliver was imprisoned for so long. Fagin is hanged before a large crowd. Monks retires with his money to a distant part in America. Having quickly spent his fortune he takes to crime once again. Charley Bates is so apalled by the fearful deaths of Sykes and Fagin that he decides to lead an honest life. He takes to farming and finally becomes a contented farmer, in Northamptonshire. Three months after the great events, Rose marries Harry Maylie, Mrs. Maylie's son, and Mrs. Maylie goes to live with her son and Rose. Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver as his son. They go with Mrs. Bedwin to live near the Maylies. Mr. Grimargg and the doctor form a great friendship and everyone closely connected lives in a small society and their happiness increases with the news of the birth of a son to Harry and Rose.
