Sivaram killing: Don't rush into conclusions - Prajathanthra

While condemning the dastardly killing, it is also necessary to caution persons against rushing to apportion the blame for his killing to anyone or any organization, without adequate proof, says Prajathantra, Movement for Social Democracy & Foundation for Freedom of Expression in a statement on the assassination of journalist D. Sivaram.

"It is necessary to urge the Government and the Police to make the most thorough investigations to seek out the killers. This should not remain another unsolved crime, the statement added.

Excerpts of the statement: "We unreservedly condemn the killing of D. Sivaram or "Taraki" as a major attack on the freedom of expression in Sri Lanka.

"An excellent journalist with an admirable ability for analysis of difficult situations, he was also one who lived in the shadow of danger. His house was searched twice by the police who found no incriminating evidence. The rift between the Karuna and Vanni factions of the Tamil Tigers would have made him more vulnerable.

"Some sections of the media have blamed the JVP for this killing, with no proof to offer. A TNA member has blamed the Government for the killing. Similarly, the leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe has said the Government should take responsibility for Sivaram's killing.

In is necessary here to ask Wickremesinghe whether he accepts the responsibility of the UNP government in 1988/89 for the killing of Richard de Zoysa and other journalists and media practitioners at that time. It is also necessary to remind the public that it was the Government in which Wickremesinghe was Prime Minister who stopped the case against those accused of killing Richard de Zoysa and later even opposed the setting up of a commission of inquiry to probe into Richard's killing."
