Appreciation by US for fighting fraud U.S. Diplomatic Security Officers Alex Moore and Michele Collins presented plaques of appreciation to the Colombo Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Chandra Fernando, the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau, and the Criminal Investigation Department Anti-Human Smuggling Branch at the IGP's office Monday for their invaluable help in the U.S. Embassy's effort to fight fraud. Officer Alex Moore expressed enthusiastic appreciation to the Sri Lankan law enforcement officers for their superb assistance with the detention and prosecution of visa fraud offenders during 2004, saying, "The United States Government is grateful for the level of law enforcement cooperation between our two countries, demonstrated by the number of arrests of fraudulent visa applicants at our Consulate over the past few years. In 2003, Sri Lankan authorities arrested 46 visa applicants. In 2004, that number climbed to 84. So far in 2005, there have been a total of 25 arrests at our Consulate, for a total arrest count of 155. These fraud detections are instrumental in preserving the integrity of the U.S. visa-issuance process, and we thank the Sri Lankan police for their role in this effort." Also attending the ceremony were two Sri Lankan U.S. Embassy employees, Foreign Service National Investigator Gamini Ekanayake and Consular Fraud Investigator Sanjeeva Gammanpila, whose efforts to uncover illegal activity have been essential to U.S. and Sri Lankan law enforcement officers. |
