Widespread condemnation of Sivaram killing

Senior journalist D.Sivaram's killing has been condemned by wider sections of Sri Lankan society. The government had unreservedly condemned the reprehensible and dastardly killing of Sivaram. It is said that Sivaram's abduction and killing was the latest in a series of violent acts and political killings that have taken place while the Ceasefire Agreement had been operational. The government has ordered a full scale investigation.

Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda while condemning the killing, said that ``such a heinous act should not be tolerated. This murder is a blatant attack on democracy and the freedom of speech and must not be ignored by those who advocate peace and democracy."

Media and Information Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that all who cherish media freedom would deplore this gruesome killing.

The Peace Media Movement said the killing was another threat to the media freedom.

TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran said that Sivaram's writings helped to the growth of Tamil nationalism. He criticised the political bankruptcy of certain forces and the mistakes committed by the Tamil side. The Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance had strongly condemned the murder. It said that his death will be an irreparable loss to the media community in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in a statement said the killing was an act of cowardice and would leave an indelible black mark on media freedom.
