CH on winning trend, down Havies 15-8

by Lal Gunesekera

CH & FC continued with their winning streak so far. They won their second game in the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship with a 15 points (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) win over Havelocks yesterday at Maitland Crescent after leading 10-5 at half-time. Last week, they beat Air Force 29-15.

CH should have won by a bigger margin, but ex-Policeman Harshana Wijeweera missed a couple of easy penalties. Also, they had a fair share of possession, but failed to capitalise by not running the ball. The forwards did well by using their weight in the rucks and mauls, but the outsides failed.

Havies too had their chances, but they too were let down badly by the outsides who kicked away possession rather unnecessarily. Perhaps this was their first game for the season and coach Tony Amith is certain of tying up the loose ends before their next engagement.

After Wijeweera fluffed a simple 20-metre penalty in the third minute, he made amends eight minutes later with a 15-metre kick to put CH ahead 3-0. It took Havies 24 minutes before scoring and going ahead. This came about after their full-back

Thajudeen kicked the ball near the half-way mark for right winger Lakala Perera to collect and then send a return pass to Thajudeen who in turn sent left winger Suranga Jagoda over the left corner flag. Prasad Perera missed the difficult conversion and Havies led 5-3.

Ten minutes later, CH took the lead again when their second-rower Senaka Bandara used his weight to go over off a five-metre line-out on the left flank. Wijeweera put over a fine conversion and CH led 10-5.

After the "turn around", it was a ding-dong battle between the two sides, but they failed to penetrate each other's defence which stood firm. In the 28th minute, Wijeweera, missed a 35-metre penalty for CH, but five minutes later, Havies reduced the lead through a 20-metre penalty by Prasad Perera and, then in the dying stages of the game, CH's prop Sashika Cooray barged through off a short-tap on the right flank and with Wijeweera missing the conversion, CH led 15-8 till the final whistle.

Bohoran who came in as a replacement for Milinda Jayasinghe, the CH scrum-half, in the second session was sent to "Sin Bin" in the final stages. Nizam Jamaldeen refereed. Kandy again

Kandy Sports Club who are defending their title scored their second consecutive win in Colombo. Yesterday at Ratmalana, they beat Air Force by 48 points to 3 after leading 26-3 at half-time.
