Asian U-14 tennis c'ship :

Indika, Nilupul take both Singles & Doubles titles

Top seed Indika Wettasinghe and bottom seed Nilupul Gunasekera won both Singles and Doubles titles among the boys and girls respectively at the Asian Under-14 Tennis Championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) under the aegis of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) at Greenpath.

This was sponsored by Australian Open and is the beginning of the Under-14 ranking system for players in Asia.

Wettasinghe beat seventh seeded Guyanga Weerasekera in the Boys' Singles final in a three-setter (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) after beating Hong Yuan Chee of Malaysia, the fifth seed, (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) in the quarter-final and fourth seeded Arvind Fernando, son of former veteran Davis Cup player, Arjun Fernando, in the semi-finals 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Then in the Boys' Doubles, Wettasinghe combined with Arvind Fernando (top seeds) to beat Shehan Gomez and Eshan Jayamanne, the bottom seeds, in straight sets, (6-2, 6-1) in the final.

Earlier, Wettasinghe and Fernando beat Thassim Buhardeen and Sanjaya Senanayake (seeded No.4) 6-1, 7-5 in the semi-final and seventh seeded Kaushalya Kulatunga and Sahan Pandula 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter-final.

Nilupul Gunasekera won the Girls' Singles title beating top seeded Jithmi Jayawickreme in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) after beating third seeded Amritha Muttiah (6-0, 6-2) in the semi-final and Sherene Wijesinghe (6-0, 6-0). in the quarterfinal.

Nilupul then partnered by Jithmi won the Girls' Doubles title beating the bottom seeded pair of Shennelle Abeysekera and Amritha Muttiah (6-0, 6-2) in the final after getting the better of Ajini Gunawardene and Shanuki Thilekaratne 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-final where only four pairs entered for the event.
