Binupa Wijesinghe - set to win men's gross division

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Fifteen year old Binupa Wijesinghe looks set to lift the men's gross division title at the end of the tenth round of the Lectra Golf Championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by the Lectra Apparel Technologies which is worked off every month at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella.

This golf championship has become extremely popular attracting golfers from all parts of the island. A significant feature is that some promising young golfers have emerged from this competition casting aside the myth that golf is a game played by the elders to while away their time, talking business among other matters.

The club on its part headed by the amiable Director/General Manager Tony Witham with the support of Club Secretary Steffan de Run, Marketing Manager Lalindra Ranaweera, Caddie Master Peter Perera and of course the Course Manager Mahel Bulumulla have played their part well and more.

The Chairman of the Lectra Apparel Technologies (Pvt.) Limited Rohan de Silva himself a fine golfer with a big heart has done his best to promote and develop golf at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort.

With ten rounds of the competition completed, Binupa Wijesinghe leads the Mons Gross Division points table with 175 points with the experienced Anol de silva in the second position with 66 which means a lead of 111 and an unassailable one at that.

Anil de Silva participated only in a few rounds and likewise Binupa Wijesinghe missed several rounds due to examinations and matches abroad.

At present it looks like that Binupa Wijesinghe has virtually wrapped up the title with only two rounds to go. In third place is another 15 year old schoolboy from Ecole International School, Digana Chamil Wickremasinghe with 46 points followed by veteran Priath Fernando 39 and Sam Gunaratne 33.

The men's nett division is led by Chamil Wickremesinghe with 1725 points followed by Sam Gunaratne with 1425 points, who has an outside chance of having a go at the title.

Sam Gunaratne missed the first four rounds of the competition as he was abroad playing cricket but Chamil Wickremasinghe who has participated in this competition without a break and if he participates in the next two rounds will be entitled to participation bonus points which will allow him to sneak a march on the final round of the competition.

Roshan Dias who started off well but missed some of the rounds due to a back injury is lying third with 1290 points and the Hemachandra twins from Kandy Gateway College are behind this trio with Sampath 934 points and Sidath 783 points.

Despectacled and liesome Niloo Jayatillake leads the Ladies Division title with 1285 points enjoying a good lead of 391 points over the second placed Manori Jayakoddy of Hyundai Motor Company Limited. Niloo Jayatillake has been playing well especially if the conditions are difficult putting her enormous skills to best use. On present form she should stretch her lead in the next two rounds.

Manori Jayakoddy started off with a bang leading the race in the early stages but midway she failed to fire all her cylinders which saw her drop points and allow Niloo Jayatillake to forge ahead.

In third and fourth places are the two sisters Usha de Silva 784 whose act of sportsmanship in an earlier round left an indelible mark in the championship which in a way dinished her chances of moving up the ladder followed by Anusha Senadeera with 715 points.
