World Athletic Day gets the sport off to a start May 7

The year 2005 Athletic calendar will get off to a start with the IAAF World Athletic Day to be held on May 7 together with the Decathlon and Heptathlon championships on May 6 and 7 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. Meanwhile the first National Trials have been fixed on June 3 and 4 at the same venue.

In a circular issued by Prema Pinnawale, Secretary General of Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, the World Athletic Day meet will be part of the promotion of athletics among young athletes.

Only those who are born in 1988/1989 will be eligible to compete at the World Athletic Day meet. The events to be worked off are: Boys - 100 metres, 400 metres, 1500 metres, 5,000 metres, 110 metres hurdle, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, shot putt and 10,000 metres race walking.

Girls - 100 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 3,000 metres, 100 metres, hurdle, long jump, high jump and 10,000 race walking. Entries should be forward to Chairman Competition Committee, 33 Torrington Avenue, Colombo 7. The meet will commence on May 7 at 8.30 a.m.

Decathlon and Heptathlon C'ships

The Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships will be held on May 6 and 7 at the Sugathadasa Stadium, commencing from 8.30 a.m. on both days.

The Decathlon will be for men open and under-20 and the events to be held are 100 metres, 400 metres, 1,500 metres, 110 metres hurdle, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot putt, discus throw, javelin throw. The events for Heptathlon open and under-20 are 200 metres, 800 metres, high jump, long jump 100 metres hurdle, shot putt and javelin throw.

National Trials

Meanwhile the first National Trials will be held on June 3 and 4 at the Sugathadasa Stadium and the entries will close on May 10.

Seventeen events have been included for both men and women. The men's events 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres, triple jump, 110 and 400 metres hurdles, 3000 metres, steeple chase, high jump, long jump, pole vault, discus throw, javelin throw-shot putt.

The women's events - 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500, 5,000, 10,000 metres, 100, 400 metres hurdles, 3,000 metres steeple chase, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, discus throw, javelin throw, shot putt.
