Boxer Manju improves with every meet

by Upananda Jayasundara, Kandy Sports Special Corr.

Manju Dinesh Kumara Wanniarachchi won the Silver Medal for Sri Lanka at the recently concluded Kings Cup Boxing Meet held in Bangkok, Thailand.

An old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy, who boxed in the bantam weight class (Kg 54) beat Japanese opponent in the first bout and in the 2nd bout he beat a boxer from Vietnam and lost narrowly to the Korean Boxer in the final bout.

Wanniarachchi started his boxing career at Vidyartha, Kandy and entered the Stubbs Shield Meet on more than eight occasions in various (1990 to 1998) weight classes and remained unbeaten, which may be a record.

His first coach was L.A.Amunugama, and Wanniarachchi also won a Silver Medal at the SAF Games held in Pakistan. He is presently attached to 'Slimline Garments' and he is thankful to the present President of the Boxing Association Dian Gomes for the support given to him to join this Company.

His aim is to represent Sri Lanka at the 2008 Olympics.
