Vadri-Karavadi leather products to be developed Vadri-Karavadi, the traditional leather products manufacturing village of Neliaddy divisional secretariat division in Jaffna district was given a new lease of life under the "Gurupaheyen Ranpaheyata" (From brown to gold) thousand industrial village development program launched by the Ministry of Rural Industries Development. The Ministry launched a project to develop traditional leather manufacturing industries of the Vadri-Karavadi by providing infrastructure, equipment and knowledge. Vadri Karavadi has a long history of manufacturing leather products. By 1914 the village was well known for manufacturing shoes. In 1955 the leather manufacturers of the Vadri Karavadi started a co-operative society of shoe manufacturers. Vadri Karavadi leather products had an islandwide market. However after the war and subsequent results industrialists faced problems and production as well as the market was limited. Even today they have a limited market in the Jaffna and Vavuniya districts in the North. Today around hundred families of the village are engaged in the industry. There are 14 leather products manufacturing villages among the 200 industrial villages selected to be developed under the first phase of the program and Vadri Karavadi is one of them. The Ministry has allocated Rs. 4 million for the project and the Industrial Development Board (IDB) has already started training programs in the village, ministry sources said. (GW) |
