Country on track to achieve MDG goals The country's first Millennium Development Goals (MDG) report was launched on May 17 at the Sri Lanka Development Forum in Kandy by Finance Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama. The book was presented to the United Nations Resident Coordinator Miguel Bermeo. The country is on track of achieving some of the MDG indicators such as primary education, infant mortality, maternal mortality and gender equality in education, said National Coordinator MDG in Sri Lanka Sherman Gunatillake. He said that poverty still remains a major challenge where every one out of four Sri Lankans are living below the national poverty line. Achieving the 1-7 goals is a responsibility of the developing countries while goal 8 is a responsibility of the developed countries to extend their support to developing countries to achieve their goals. The consultation process for the report has institutionalised in creating a cluster for MDG under the National Council for Economic Development (NCED).The cluster represents secretaries of 11 line ministries who are responsible in achieving MDGs. The cluster also represents stakeholders from the private sector such as chambers and voluntary and social welfare organisations. (SG) |
