Maruti to open showrooms in main towns by L. S. A. Wedaarachchi Associated Motorways Co. Ltd., (AMW), the importer of Maruti cars in Sri Lanka is exploring the possibility of opening 'Maruti' showrooms and service stations in the main towns in Sri Lanka. A team of representatives from Maruti Udyog Limited, India arrived in Sri Lanka last week and held a series of discussions on the expansion of the Maruti sales network in Sri Lanka and related matters, with their sole agent in Sri Lanka AMW Ltd. Due to the high demand of Maruti cars, AMW Sri Lanka and Maruti Udyog Company, India feel that more sales centres are needed for Sri Lanka. At present the Colombo centre is handling all sales matters. Kandy, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Matara, Galle and Badulla have been earmarked to open new showrooms at the preliminary stage. The final touches to the construction of the fully automated and computerised state of the art Maruti showroom at Borella will be opened by the end of July. Special attention has been given for the customer's convenience. Explaining the sales achievements of 'Maruti' in the last few years, Viran De Zoysa, Business Development Manager of AMW - Maruti said Maruti reached the number one position by selling brand new vehicles in Sri Lanka and has maintained that position in the last two years. Excellent after sales service and re-sale value are some of the main features of Maruti's success, he said. The customers' confidence in 'Maruti' vehicles has been built over the last few years and our efforts have been geared at consolidating that position, he said. At present 16 official Maruti service stations equipped with original Maruti spare parts and trained mechanics operate in Kurunegala, Balangoda, Matara and Gampola. Five models of brand new Maruti vehicles - Suzuki cars - namely Maruti 800, Maruti Zen, Maruti Alto, Maruti WagonR, Maruti Esteem and Maruti Omni vans are available at the AMW Maruti sales centre in Colombo. Maruti Udyog Limited, New Delhi, India began assembling Suzuki vehicles under the name of Maruti-Suzuki in nineteen eighties and more than 70 per cent shares of Maruti Udyog Limited are owned by Suzuki Motors, Japan. All technical and management personnel of the Maruti Udyog plant were trained in Japan by Suzuki Motors to maintain the quality and efficiency of the Maruti plant in India. Of the brand new cars the Suzuki WagonR car was selected as the number one in its class in Japan last year. In view of the narrow roads and high fuel prices a small car such as Maruti-Suzuki has a potential market in Sri Lanka. |
