Construction work on new neuro trauma unit to begin soon Construction work on the state-of-the-art neuro trauma unit for the National Hospital will begin in the third quarter of this year and the unit will be completed by July 2007. The unit will offer comprehensive healthcare facilities for patients with head and spinal injuries. Enabled through a loan provided by the Saudi Arabian Government, the overall cost of this project will be Rs. 1,500 million. The new neuro trauma unit building will consist of a lower ground car park and an upper ground helipad floor. The unit will have eight floors providing comprehensive facilities with a bed strength of three hundred and three. Radiology services for Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI and DSA will be available. A physiotherapy unit, three operation theatres for neuro trauma, three operation theatres for neuro surgery, eleven emergency observation beds, intensive care units for neuro trauma and neuro surgery, in patient wards, a rehabilitation ward, a laboratory, and blood store will be among the key facilities available in this unit. An auditorium, administrative facilities, hospital support services, staff accommodation and engineering support services will also be housed in the building enabling this neuro trauma unit to offer services that match any in the world. National Hospital statistics show that from all patients involved in fatal accidents, in ninth place is those suffering from head and spinal injuries. Therefore, the establishment of this neuro trauma unit is an urgent need for Sri Lanka. Progress has been satisfactory so far and all approvals are in the process of finalisation. |
