CWC supports PTOMS set up

From Tamil Press by M.P. Muttiah

Ceylon Workers' Congress leader Arumugam Thondaman assured President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga his fullest support to the setting up of Post-Tsunami Operational Management Structure (PTOMS). At a meeting with the President, CWC leader also stressed the need to appoint teachers in the plantation areas. (Virakesari (VK) 21/5).

President Kumaratunga is preparing to take decisive decisions. She had asked ruling party parliamentarians who went abroad to return immediately. Sources close to the President said she would make significant moves in the coming week.

It was reported that parliamentarians had began to return to the island. (Sudar Oli. (SOI) 20/5)

A protest rally was held in Talawakelle against Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project. Hundreds of participants belonged to NGOs, environmental organisations and several political parties took part in the rally. However, the main political parties, the Ceylon Workers' Congress and the Up Country People's Front did not participate. (SOI 16/5) Talawakelle-Lindula UC Chairman M.M. Wimalsena said that Talawakelle town had not been developed for the past two decades. With the commencement of Upper Kotmale project Talawakelle would see rapid progress.

He was speaking at a rally held in support of the project. He said new houses, temples, churches, schools, libraries, community centres and a new UC office would be built. (SOI 16/5).

The Ceylon Workers' Congress has urged President Kumaratunga to carry forward the peace process. It has also welcomed the results of the Development Forum held in Kandy.

The CWC said that it was unfortunate that the UNP had not been positive on PTOMS. It had urged all political forces to unite to rebuild the tsunami-affected country.(SOI 18/5).

LTTE political chief S.P. Thamilselvan said that accepting PTOMS would not mean the approval of the sovereignty of Sri Lanka.

The LTTE had agreed to joint mechanism as it did not come under the control of the Presidential Secretariat, Prime Minister's Office or Parliament. PTOMS would address urgent humanitarian needs. (SOI 18/5).

An independent Police Commission has begun investigation on the shooting incident on May 9 at Santhiveli, Batticaloa.

Statements from more than 40 people had been recorded. Batticaloa District TNA parliamentarians, army and police officers, students and public were among them. SSP Kapila Balasuriya was conducting the inquiries.

This shooting incident occurred when the public protested against a newly-established joint army-police check point near Santhiveli junction. A 65-year old man was killed and 20 injured in shooting. (SOI 16/5).

Batticaloa police said that 15 had been killed and 31 injured within a period of last 20 days.

The police said the killed were members of LTTE, EPDP and Karuna faction. (VK 21/5).
