Keerthi-Gee : For a sporty cause

Honoured with an International Award from the World Science Council in Japan in 1996, where he competed with musicians of repute from thirteen countries, Keerthi Pasquel moves again to the centre stage with his now famous Keerthi Gee Musical Concert.

A household name in the music arena and a singer 'for all seasons' his Musical Concert will be staged on Saturday, May 28 at the Bishop's College Auditorium commencing 6.45 p.m. This time Keerthi Gee will be a fund raiser for the construction of a swimming pool at Dharmaraja College, Kandy. The event is being organised by the Colombo Branch of the Old Boys Association of the College, who have gone to lengths to treat the audience to a spectacular show with fabulous lighting.

Keerthi Pasquel will be singing many of his well-known hits including Kandula, Sandalatha, Neela Abase, Warsave, Issara Aadikale and Sinhala Raja Kale . Joining him in duets will be Chandraleka Perera, Dammika Bandara, Deepika Priyadharshini Peiris, Neela Wickremasinghe and Damitha Abeyratne. The musical backing is by Sarath de Alwis and his orchestra. The show will be threaded together by Wasantha Rohana and Indunilk Dissanayake.

Keerthi Gee over the years has been staged more than one hundred times and they say that Keerthi Pasquel has sung more than three hundred songs winning the hearts and admiration of a multitude of music lovers. He started off his music career as a bassist with the Galaxies and later re-organised the band 'Fortunes' in 1989., With this group he made a great impact both in Sri Lanka and overseas when he performed his shows in the Middle East, Japan, Singapore, Italy, France, England.

On his return from New Zealand he formed his latest band 'Sonic'. Tickets for Saturday's Keerthi Gee are available at Torana, Majestic City, Sarasavi Nugegoda and Salaka at Union Place.

'Sraddhanjali' on Rupavahini

A musical concert titled 'Sraddhanjali' will be aired on Rupavahini as a dialogue cum audio visual programme on Vesak Fullmoon Day of May 23 from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m.

'Sraddhanjali' is presented by Sisira Kothalawala, Deputy Director General (programmes) of Rupavahini Corporation.

It includes old and modern devotional songs describing sublime events from the life of the Buddha and also the virtues of parents, sung by veteran musicians including Pandit Visharada Amaradewa, Karunaratne Divulgane and Somatilleke Jayamaha. They will sing to the accompaniment of music by an orchestra led by Visharada Manoj Peiris.

Lyricist Ven. Rambukkana Siddhartha Thera is expected to participate in a dialogue in the course of the programme. 'Sraddhanjali' is a production by Mahinda Samarakoon of the Programmes Unit of the Rupavahini Corporation.

"The programme is motivated to inculcate appreciation of Buddhist virtues and revival of morals and Buddhist concepts, which are on the wane at present", remarked Sisira Kothalawala, speaking on the programme. Sisira counts more than 25 years experience in presenting children's programmes and those pertaining to informal education and religion. In addition to being a TV artiste, he is also a popular stage actor, a jazz player, a cinema editor and a lyricist.

A helping hand

The Girl Child Centre of the YMCA carried out a successful tsunami service programme in the Galle and Hambantota districts with the minimum of funding.


The Medical Superintendent of the Base Hospital, Hambantota receiving medical and surgical supplies from the Colombo YWCA members Nadine Mediwake and Shirani de Fonseka.

The total amount of cash they collected in donations amounted to Rs. 69,000, yet they opened two bank accounts at the Commercial Banks, Hikkaduwa for the sums of Rs. 24,275 each for two tsunami affected children who were selected by the Galle YWCA. At Hambantota, the Public Affairs Committee of the Child Centre also opened bank accounts for 30 children starting with Rs. 500 which will be an ongoing project.

Donations of gift packages for mothers and babies, including school, medical, toilet and linen supplies were distributed. At the Hambantota hospital, medical supplies and surgical gloves were donated to the Medical Superintendent. Most of the donations came from well-wishers living abroad.

'Concert Aid'

The acknowledged Peradeniya Singers will join young professionals to stage two concerts to provide aid for the tsunami victims.

The first of the two 'Concert Aid' will be held on Friday, May 27 at Girls High School, Kandy at 6.30 p.m. The second concert will be held in Colombo on Sunday, May 29 and will commence at 7.00 p.m.

The young professionals will be children from the Centre for Performing Arts in Trincomalee. The programme of the Peradeniya Singers will include works from Mozart, Chopin, Delius, Bella Bartok, The Jewish Zolshoin, Solos on piano and on violin. The choir will be singing popular favourites like Bobby McFerrins 'on't Worry Be Happy.

Composed of students and working people, including many expatriates, the group rehearses weekly, both in Kandy and Colombo.

Besides the annual concerts staged by the Peradeniya Singers directed by Bridget Halpe, the group has participated in several special programmes including the prestigious concert in celebration of the Bach/Handel tricentennial (1985), the bicentennial of the French Republic (1989), the ceremonial opening of the rebuilt Central Bank building (2001) to name a few. Many were the Christmas and Easter concerts of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka in which the choir participated on invitation.

Aussie Sri Lankans on tsunami help mission

Sri Lankan Australians who have formed a committee named HELP Sri Lanka have banded together to provide support to the tsunami-affected in their motherland. HELP Sri Lanka Incorporated was formed as a Melbourne-based not-for-profit organisation soon after the tsunami struck Sri Lanka on Boxing Day.

HELP Sri Lanka's committee members, CEO of Rowland-Pinder PR Melbourne and former Miss Australia Beverley Pinder and Keith de Kretser who is the Secretary of HELP Sri Lanka, will visit Sri Lanka along with HELP Sri Lanka's patron Susan Riley who formerly was the Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Melbourne. "Volunteering is an integral aspect of our community participation.

HELP Sri Lanka presents the opportunity for me to give back to an important migrant group, that is so much a part of the fabric of our Australian culture and society. I also believe that my considerable knowledge of Melbourne will greatly assist the hardworking committee further spread the word about Sri Lanka's needs", stated Susan Riley.
