Cr# : Teen rockers

by Mahes Perera

Following in the footsteps of Hanson the teenage group that rocked the world and the global charts, Cr# (Crash) the Sri Lankan teenage group has succeeded in breaking into the local music scene. These young enthusiastic musicians are students from Royal College, Colombo studying for their O/Levels.

Come what may, music has an overriding power over you and to these youngsters it is no different. Led by fifteen year old Birendra Gabadamudalige who plays guitar, keyboards and handles the arrangements of their repertoire, the young group comprises six others. Originally there were four in the group, but the music vibes reached out to include the others. There's Viraga the singer, Dilruk plays the shredding guitar, Laknath strums the rhythm guitar, Nivendra handles the keyboards, Prageeth plays bass, Akila sits on the drumstool augmented by Ramal who provides the percussion. All the boys provide harmony and sing too.

"Our first appearance was at Saga which was held at the BMICH. We were keen on being on stage and performing that we did it without having a name for ourselves! But we enjoyed ourselves!

Thereafter we made our appearance at the Reach Out on January 28 in aid of the tsunami victims and were also in the next three concerts in this series", Birendra tells us.

A student of music as well Birendra is studying classical piano Grade 6 of the Royal Schools of Music, and is extending his knowledge of music by acquiring a formal education in guitar from Dereck Wickramanayake of Wild Fire fame. The group listens to classic rock the likes of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and other bands like Guns 'n Roses, Linkin Park and Santana.

They intend recording a CD of originals but at the moment they play covers to get flexibility in playing together.

"What we want to do is to have our own unique sound, so that people can recognise us no sooner we play the opening bars of a tune. We want to have an identity, and as a band we will strive to ensure that each member gets the opportunity to be showcased and appreciated", concludes Birendra.

That Cr# is committed to achieving success is pretty evident. Their minds are open to development in their career and we wish them all success.
