Security for Vesak sightseers by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Security will be beefed up in the Colombo city during Vesak week to afford protection to sightseers and devotees who are expected to flock in large numbers to view pandals, dramas and to patronise several dansalas that have come up in several locations. Although there are "a few pandals this time, several Dansalas and Vesak Lanterns have come up in Colombo city and the Greater Colombo areas including Kalutara, Panadura, Negombo, Maharagama, Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia and Kelaniya areas. Senior DIG Colombo Range, and Ranges 02, Sirisena Herath said around 5,000 policemen alone have been detailed in Colombo for protection of people and property from thieves, pickpockets and perverts mingling with large crowds expected to throng Colombo city and the Greater Colombo area. Several plain clothes policemen have been detailed in the Colombo city to keep an eye on undesirables during this period. He said several road blocks will be erected in the city limits with the deployment of Special Task Force (STF) personnel and Army personnel who would keep a close tab on activities within Colombo city. Pandals are found at the following places in Colombo city. Dematagoda Junction, Kent Road Dematagoda, Grandpass Kosgas Junction, Thotalanga, Malwatte - Grandpass, Nawaloka Sports Complex, Bastian Mawatha - Pettah, Deans Road - Maradana. Gangarama Temple, James Peris Mawatha - Colombo 2, and Borella Junction. |
