Kasippu brewing despite Vesak

It has become such a lucrative trade that manufacturers do not stop manufacturing Kasippu even during Vesak days.

A wealthy businessman and two of his employees were arrested by the Walana Central Anti- Vice Striking Unit following a raid on an illicit liquor distillery located in the heart of Embuldeniya- town in Mirihana last Friday, police said.

A massive haul of illicit liquor including 225 barrels of (Goda) Unlawfully Manufactured Liquor (UML) and 225 bottles of Unlawfully Distilled Sprits (UDS) were found in a well protected residence converted into distillery.

Police found inside the house a specially constructed pipeline connected from the distillery to a massive tank which can store around 5000 gallons of liquor. "The idea was that people in the neighbourhood do not get the smell of liquor while it is being manufactured. Gas cylinders were used in the distillation process." police said. The two suspects and the apparatus used for distilling kasippu were produced at the Mirihana Police Station.

The raid was conducted by Sub -Inspector Duminda Balasooriya on receipt of information under the direction of SP Jayantha Perera and ASP D. Ranaweera of the Central Anti-Vice Striking Unit. (JJ)
