Benefits from Agrahara Insurance

by Ananda Kannangara

The 700,000 workforce in the public sector will once again benefit with the "Agrahara Medical Insurance Scheme" under a special circular, issued by the Ministry of Public Administration to all Government institutions last Thursday.

The circular No. 5/97, issued by the Public Administration Ministry in regard to this medical scheme issued on 1997.01.31, was revised by Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda with several amendments.

According to the amended circular, all Ministry secretaries, chief secretaries in provincial councils and the heads of Government departments countrywide will have to take appropriate action to make reimbursements for the claims issued from 01.01. 2005.

In an interview with the Sunday Observer, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda said that the public sector was highly benefited with the scheme earlier, but due to various reasons some reimbursements were not made by the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd (SLICL) in the latter period.

"However we are keen to continue the scheme with more benefits, considering the safety and welfare of a large number of workers in the public sector," he said. According to the circular, reimbursements are made as follows.

Rs. 15,000 for hospital admissions of workers and their dependents and Rs. 50,000 for surgeries also on workers and their dependents. Reimbursements are also made for child births and legally performed abortions of relevant employees. The public servants can also make reimbursements for purchasing spectacles, but they are not entitled payments for Out Patients Department (OPD) treatments.

It is reported that a sum of Rs. 75 is deducted from the salaries of each public servant every month towards this scheme, irrespective of their positions. The "Agrahara medical insurance scheme" was initiated by the Public Administration Ministry in December 1996 on a request made by the then Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremenayaka.
