Tourist drive to 'Rediscover Sri Lanka' by Chanuka Mannapperuma Major players in Sri Lanka's tourism industry have joined together to launch a Rs. 400 million mega tourism promotion drive titled "Rediscover Sri Lanka". The Ministry of Tourism, Sri Lankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Tourist Board and the Tourism Cluster join together to spearhead this three and a half months campaign on international television and press.It commenced on May 16. The campaign will initially consist of commercials on pan-regional television in Europe, the Middle-East, Far East and South Asia such as CNN, BBC, National Geographic, A1, Sky, Animal Planet and Discovery. For this campaign, Sri Lankan Airlines is providing US$ 2.1 million in funding for the first two months while the next one and a half months will be financed by Sri Lanka Tourism Board and the Tourism Cluster. Localised press advertisements will be published in the UK, Germany, France which are Sri Lanka's major tourist origins. Meanwhile, SriLankan Airlines will also commence thrice weekly services to China from June 15. The flights on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday will operate from Colombo to Beijing via Bangkok. Under this, the airline will initially focus on the huge family travel and leisure market from China to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, as well as providing the Chinese traveller with convenient connections to the Middle East and Europe. This will be in keeping with SriLankan's vision of making Colombo the hub
in South Asia, while promoting the Maldives and Sri Lanka as twin holiday
destinations. |
