Steps taken to increase milk production by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Ministry has taken steps to produce milk and milk products within the country reducing milk importation. Minister Anura Dissanayake who met dairy farmers and some interested entrepreneurs pledged to provide all necessary infrastructure to develop milk and milk products sector of the country. Small and medium scale dairy farmers and entrepreneurs who wish to invest on milk production and milk products from almost all the districts forwarded their problems at a meeting held in the Ministry premises recently. Dairy farmers who represented the Hambantota, Ampara and Puttalam districts said that they were running their business under strain due to lack of proper facilities. Ministry officials agreed to set up fully equipped veterinary centres and to meet their other requirements. The common problem brought up by almost all the participants at the meeting was lack of grass-lands to feed their cows. Minister Dissanayake pledged to provide grass lands in every district. He also said that the Alliance government was ready to take policy decisions to develop the country's dairy sector. The Agriculture Ministry has also decided to provide all necessary requirements for dairy farmers assisting them to run their dairy farms as micro business ventures. The Minister who stressed the need to conserve foreign exchange pledged to encourage new entrepreneurs on dairy farms to increase local production and slash imports. |
