'E. W. Perera, Portrait of a True Patriot of Sri Lanka' launched by Ananda Kannangara The Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Duleep de Chickera on Thursday highly admired the life and achievements of the late E. W. Perera and said that his splendid career in the field of law was commendable. Rev. Chickera said that E. W. Perera had acquired a wide knowledge in the field of law as well as on the parliamentary system. He made these observations at a ceremony, held to mark the launching of a book, titled "E. W. Perera...Portrait of a true patriot of Sri Lanka", written by Mrs. Rita Perera. "During the communal riots in Sri Lanka in 1915 when the then British Governor declared Martial Law to prevent anti-government activities, E. W. Perera was chosen to report the atrocities committed in Ceylon to the Secretary of State for the Colonies in England," he said. Rev. Chickera recalled how this patriot successfully accomplished the mission entrusted to him by hiding the `shoot at sight document' of the then Governor in the sole of his shoe and set sail for England, risking his own life, amidst the perils of the First World War. "If there was even the slightest suspicion about the nature of his mission, especially that he was carrying incriminating evidence of the harsh decrees, the then Governor Chalmers and his cronies had promulgated, E. W. was liable to have been `Shot at Sight' too. He also said that this patriot loved all communities alike and always shown a special gesture to the teachings of Buddha. While appreciating the book, Rev. Chickera also made a request from the
author to take steps to translate this into Sinhala and Tamil, so that a
large number of readers, especially the future generation in the country
would be able to read about the life and achievements of the late E. W.
