Mannar villages to get potable water by Don Asoka Wijewardena An agreement between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation was signed on May 20 by UNHCR Sri Lanka representative Rajiv Kapur and Dr. A. S. Kunasingham, Senior Advisor to the Rehabilitation Ministry to finance, to reconstruct and to provide drinking water to 5000 people living in the villages of Thevanpiddy, Moonrampiddy and Vellankulam in the Mannar district. Addressing a media conference,Dr.Kunasingham said that the project would be implemented by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board with the supervision by the North East Community Restoration and Development Project (NECORD) and added that upon completion UNICEF would connect the supply connections to schools and health centres while UNDP would further extend the pipeline to two other villages. Dr. Kunasingham explained that the project would be funded by the Denmark government through the Danish Development Co-operation Office at cost of Rs.25.9 million as people in three water-scarce villages in Mannar district had been depending on water bowsers and wells in Paliaru. According to the Rehabilitation Ministry, the funds will be utilised to construct an overhead tank, pump house, generator house, quarters, repairs to intake wells. |
