Binupa Wijesinghe poised to take senior gross title at Lectra C'ships

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Fifteen-year-old student from Wycherly International School, Colombo Binupa Wijesinghe has built up a commanding lead of 122 points and looks set to grab the Senior Men's Gross title at the grand prix of the Lectra Golf Championship at the end of the penultimate round organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Lectra Apparel Technologies which is worked off every month at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. The Grand Prix will be tomorrow at 7 a.m.

At the end of the 11th round of this 12 round competition, young Binupa Wijesinghe - a budding golfer in the local golf horizon has accumulated 187 points in the Gross Division against 65 points by the second placed Anil de Silva - a lead of 122 points which is impossible to catch up even if Binupa gives the final round a miss.

The next round is scheduled to be played next week. In third place is another schoolboy from Ecole International School Digana - Chamil Wickremasinghe with 46 points. This will give some indication as to what extend Binupa Wijesinghe has dominated this division of the championship.

Fifteen-year-old Chamil Wickramasinghe however leads the Men's Nett Division with 1,782 points - a lead of 356, over the second placed Sam Goonaratne who has 1,426 points. A top class performance by Sam Goonaratne could spell problem for young Chamil Wickremasinghe as the points awarded in the Nett Division is much higher than in the Gross Division. In third spot is Kandy Gateway College schoolboy Sampath Hemachandra with 934 points followed by his twin brother Sidath Hemachandra 783 points.

Versatile Niloo Jayatillake leads the Ladies Division with 1,345 points and Manori Jayakoddy of Hyundai Motor Company is behind her with 923 points. Though Niloo is leading but Manori is capable of an upset if she could regain the form she displayed in the initial rounds of the competition when she led the race for three months but she got stuck at 640 points for several rounds and her engine refused to fire its cylinders till she push started herself in the last round to pose a threat of a sort to Niloo Jayatillake. In third place is Usha de Silva with 784 points and fifth place one time grand prix winner Suwen Selveratnam with 739 points.
