Thuhashini Selvaratnam - many years of golf in her

by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Thuhashini Selvaratnam who led the Sri Lanka women's golf team to win the championship title at the 7th SAARC Golf Championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort on behalf of the Sri Lanka Golf Union and the SAARC Golf Federation is one of the top golfers produced by Sri Lanka.

She has many years of golf left in her and her close association with the game and Sri Lanka can look forward for her to deliver the goods in the future too.

Twenty seven-year-old Thuhashini Selvaratnam, is the daughter of one of the top lady golfers in the local scene Suwen Selvaratnam who has won many titles especially at Victoria. Thuhashani Selvaratnam who plays to a handicap of plus two, registered 73 and 74 gross totals in the two days of the SAARC Golf Championship which was best for women in the entire championship. This performance brought her the trophy for the Best Gross Score for ladies.

Thuhashini Selvaratnam is one of the golfers who has brought fame to her motherland from her exploits on the golf course abroad. Unassuming and soft spoken she had her early education at Bishop's College, Colombo and later went over to Colombo International School for her G.C.E. Ordinary Level classes, having sat for her O/L's in 1993.

She went over to the United States of America for her higher studies at the Arizona State University. She got her degree in Business Management and International Business.

But it was at the Arizona State University that her golf career blossomed after the excellent rooting in Sri Lanka. She was a member of the Arizona State University which won several championship titles. Her success reached its pinnacle when she was the State Golf champion for the years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 - fours years in-a-row in a championship in which over 120 ladies participated. She was also adjudged the Player of the Year from the year 2000 to 2004. An excellent record.

At that time, the team which she represented won three national titles and was ranked No. 1 in the United States.

She has been a member of several Sri Lanka's womens golf teams, participating in several championships held in Asia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, India and the UAE.

At present, she is working and playing golf in the State of Arizona and is currently the Tournament Director of the Arizona Golf Association.
