Heshan Unamboowe - a bag of 20 records by Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr. Heshan Bandara Unamboowe became Pentathlon Champion in the under 14 age group winning all five events at the National Pentathlon Swimming Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium over the week-end. This is his sixth successive pentathlon victory and it may well be a record. He also set a record in 100 metres back-stroke, clocking 1.09.73 seconds and erased off a ten year old record held by Gehan Ranatunge which is 1.12.71 seconds established in 1995. This 13 year-old a grade VIII student of Trinity College, Kandy has been performing well in swimming at recent meets. Having started swimming at the age of 5 years under coaches E.G.A. Wilson & E.K. Piyasiri he shows promise of better things to come in the future. Now with the guidance of coaches U.H. Pemlath and U.S. Sugath, Heshan has improved tremendously and can expect better performances. He has also won 50 metres back-stroke at the Sri Lanka Tamil Nadu swimming championships held in Chennai. India in the year 2003. So far, he has established twenty records in major swimming meets since he started competitive swimming at the age of eight years. Heshan is thankful to Mr. Prabath Senanayake, master-in-charge and the chief administrator of Trinity College, Mr. Mohan Samarakoon for the encouragement given to him to improve his standing in this sport. |
