Annual inflation rate - 12.4% in May The annual inflation rate on the basis of 12 months moving average increased to 12.4 percent in May, 2005 from 11.9 percent in April, 2005 the Department of Census and Statistics said. The Colombo Consumers' Price Index (CCPI) for May, 2005 was 4021.5. This shows an increase of 63.0 index points or 1.6 percent from the April 2005 index number of 3958.5. This is an increase of Rs. 127.46 in the Expenditure Value of "Market basket" when compared to April 2005, a spokesman for the Department said. The increase in the CCPI for May, 2005 is mainly due to the increase in the prices of bread, condensed milk, limes, red onions, coconut oil, fresh butter, beef, pork, most varieties of fresh fish, dried fish, firewood, kerosene oil and most varieties of vegetables. These price increases can be mainly attributed to short supply of consumer goods to the main markets in the Colombo city. However, the price of rice, wheat flour, sugar and dried chilies have decreased during the month, the Department said. |
