Cheaper cement for tsunami hit buildings

by Elmo Leonard

The island's five cement manufacturers will for the next 20 months issue cement to people affected by the tsunami at 10 percent below the market price, in a bid to help them rebuild their homes or business buildings.

Holcim Lanka Ltd's price of cement to tsunami affected people is Rs 460 per bag. "This price is not very attractive for us," Holcim's managing director, Peter Spirig said.

The criteria by which a person qualifies to receive cement at a concessionary rate depends on whether the person suffered a death in his/her family consequent to the tsunami; lost his/her home, business premises and/or now belongs to a low income level.
