CBNSat to boost TV, radio clarity

Satellite Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S) is a new broadcasting service being introduced in Sri Lanka, which adds clarity and worldwide reach to the television viewer in the comfort of the home or office. This service is now accessible to all Sri Lankans throughout the island and has the capacity and infrastructure to broadcast up to 120 channels.

The service is being provided by Communiq Broadband Network (Pvt) Ltd, a Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka approved company, which has brandnamed its service as, CBNSat.

The channel partners which the company has tied up with to provide a premium quality service to Sri Lankans include Discovery (including Discovery travel and living), CNN, BBC, Pogo, Cartoon Network, MTV, VHI, Nickolodian, Raj, Raj Digital, Animal Planet, The History Channel, National Geographic Channel, AI, AXN, Animax, FTV, Reality TV, SET, Zoom, Goal TVI and Goal TV2.

CBNSat has tied up with Singer Sri Lanka, the consumer electronics and household appliances distributors who has an islandwide networking of 1000 sales outlets. The equipment needed to obtain the service is a 60 centimetre satellite dish and decoder, CBNSat's manager marketing, Chinthaka Wanasinghe said.

Some local channels, such as TNL or Sirisa, for instance, may not be seen or heard clearly in some parts of the island. Now, the CBNSat subscriber in any part of the island could view and hear all radio and television service centres clearly, Wanasinghe said.

The Distance Learning facility provided through CBNSat will enable Sri Lankan students to access and view course support programs on TV just as they would watch a normal television program by signing up with the relevant distance learning centre, it is claimed.

The service would provide Sri Lankans with access to a wide range of educational resources, which are not available in Sri Lanka, CBNSat's CEO Muhunthan Canagey said.
