Lankan team vies for Image Cup 2005 by Elmo Leonard The winner of the Sri Lankan leg for the global student technology competition called Image Cup 2005, organised by Microsoft, has a chance of making it to the top 12 of the contestants, or even win this year's competition, to be held in Tokyo, in July. According to Microsoft's regional academic programs manager, Edmund Quek, who was in Colombo, last week when the winners from among Sri Lankan contestants were chosen. A four-member team from the Faculty of IT, University of Moratuwa won the contest. They also get free air tickets with other expenses needed to take part in the global competition in Tokyo, Japan. The winning entry was called the Mobile Value Chain Integrated System. This program envisages a system focused on re-engineering the process of farmers selling their produce to distributors, and automates a model, with the objective of ensuring higher margins of profit to farmers and others involved in the process. This end is reached by cutting down unnecessary procedures through the use of technology. The female member of the winning team, Anupama Amarasinghe said that their achievement gives them an opportunity in a lifetime, to participate in the world competition in Tokyo. This global contest is held to promote excellence in computer science among young IT enthusiasts. The runner-up in this competition is also a team from the University of Moratuwa. This year, Microsoft expects over 50,000 students to take part, aiming at prizes totalling USD 215,000. While the Sri Lankan competition was aimed solely at the software design
category, the other global categories were office designer, algorithm, short
film, technology business plan, rendering IT, web development and visual
gaming. |
