Tsunami victims in Colombo : Temporary houses for 200,000 by Jayampathy Jayasinghe The Commissioner General of Essential Services, Tilak Ranavirajah held a discussion with several Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) last week at the Defence Ministry auditorium to review the Temporary Accommodation Project (TAP) in respect of 30,000 temporary houses for Tsunami victims in Colombo. It was revealed at the discussion that 32,000 houses have been completed by 31 May where around 200,000 people have been settled in these temporary shelters. Another 9,000 houses will be completed within 2-3 days time in all affected districts. The temporary housing have been constructed with assistance of local and international non-governmental organisations and UN agencies. The affected families are provided with temporary housing until permanent housing is provided under a special program initiated by the TAFFREN. Mr. Ranavirajah while thanking the non-governmental organisations including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation of Migrants (IOM) for their support said it was important to provide services relating to disposal of garbage, bowsers to clean septic tanks, adequate water supply, etc. |
