Longest bridge at Manampitiya by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Japan and Sri Lankan Governments signed an agreement last week to build the country's longest bridge at Manampitiya in Polonnaruwa. The Manampitiya Bridge which had been built almost 85 years ago is one of the busiest bridge which is being used for both trains and motor vehicles. The project had been identified to meet a solution to huge traffic congestion on the bridge. Japanese Government has pledged Rs. 990 million to build 300 metres long bridge over Mahaweli river. It would be completed within three years and the project also includes another bridge at Maradankadawala, Thrikandimadu area leading to the A 11 road. Japanese Government had also donated 35 million yen to make a feasibility study on the plan for the project. The construction process of the project would be handled by the Urban Development Authority (UDA). The Agreement was signed by Finance and Planning Ministry Secretary P. B. Jayasundara and Japanese Ambassador in SL Akio Suda. |
