Soldier Wijekoon sets new mark by Leslie Fernando Twenty-year-old Chaminda Wijekoon of the Army accounted for the solitary Sri Lanka record in the men's 1500 metres at the national selection trial conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Wijekoon, a former Welimada Central athlete attached to the Artillery Corp., started off confidently with the other runners and maintained the lead upto the finish 'clocking' 3.43.82 secs. Wijekoon erased off his own record of 2.43.87 secs at the final trial to pick athletics for the 2004 SAF Games in Pakistan. He expressed his satisfaction of his performances and added that he would record better timings at the forthcoming National Championships. L. M. S. Jayaweera, also of Sri Lanka Army, finished second (3.45.32 secs) and M. R. Chaminda of Sri Lanka Air Force third (3.51.48 secs). Prasanna Saman Amarasinghe also at the Army provided the biggest shock when he defeated the national record holder and the favourite Rohan Pradeep Kumara of Track Masters in the 400 metres event. Amarasinghe, on lane six, ran a fine race to time 45.47 secs. while Kumara timed 46.30 secs. I. M. R. Pushpakumara also of the Army took the third place (47.21 secs.). In the 100 metres for men and women, Suminda Mendis of Army returned a time of 10.88 secs and Jani Chathurangani of Lanka Lions timed 12.32 secs, to win the events respectively. |
