British trainers to conduct course in motor racing by Srian Obeyesekere Motor racing in Sri Lanka will be boosted with the arrival of two British qualified racing driver-trainers Andy Parded and Rob Gray to conduct a training programme for 60 drivers next week. Parded, who is a consultant to BMW's Formula Training Programme, and ex-Director of Training of the world renowned Jim Russel's Training School in the U.K. and Rob Gray, also with BMW, will train 20 Formula racing drivers and 40 Salon drivers here under a three-phase course of two days duration each, according to the President of Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) Richard de Zoysa. "It is a fantastic opportunity for our drivers in the first of its kind to come their way," said De Zoysa. The sessions, covering classroom and practical sessions will fine hone local talent in such key areas, particularly in Formula racing such as breaking, shifting gears, heel and toe cornering techniques at the Pannala track. Theory classes will revolve around the physical and mental aspects needed for highly competitive racing. This is the first step in a long term development programme by the SLAS since De Zoysa, a former international rallying driver, took over the 'wheel of administration' of the country's motor sports recently. Accordingly, the SLAS will send a gokart team to India in the near future while a FIFA approved rally to be held in conjunction with the Ceylon Motor Racing Association (CMRA) to be staged in Sri Lanka will see rally drivers from the Asian region participating. Details of the driver training programme could be obtained from Ranjith
Jinasena who is in charge of the local committee co-ordinating it on tel.
