Briton scales all 14 peaks over 8,000 metres

KATHMANDU, Saturday (AFP) A Briton has become the first from his country and only the 13th ever to climb all of the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 metres.

Alan Hinkes, 51, completed the task on May 30 with his ascent of the 8,586 metre-high (28,168 foot) Mount Kanchenjungha, the worlds third highest peak, on the India-Nepal border.

"Hinkes scaled the peak alone after another climber, Pasang Gelu Sherpa, dropped out just before reaching the summit due to exhaustion," Bikram Pandey, president of Himalaya Expeditions, which organised the ascent, said Saturday.

"He safely returned to Kanchenjungha Base Camp on June 1 and called me to arrange porters to bring back his equipment so that he can return to Kathmandu," he said.

Hinkes was unable to reach the summit in 2000 due to heavy snowfall and failed again in 2002 after he became sick.
