ISB targets Lankan students

from Dudley Jansz in Hyderabad, India

The Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, India will conduct Roadshows in mid July to target Sri Lankans aspiring to follow the one-year Post Graduate Program in Management, equivalent to an MBA at the ISB, Director Communications Bhuvana Ramalingam told a group of Sri Lankan business journalists here last week. She said the ISB will be collaborating with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce for the purpose.

The ISB, a research oriented Independent Management Institution also offers short-term duration Management courses for senior executives.

Director, Admissions V. K. Menon said special scholarships will be offered to Sri Lankan students. Every student from Sri Lanka who joins the ISB this year will be given the scholarships. In Sri Lanka, the ISB will explore the possibility of providing loans from the State Bank of India and other Indian Banks in Colombo.

Eighty to one hundred part scholarships of INR 1.3 lakhs each will be offered at the time of admission based on need and merit.

In addition 10-15 ISB 'Scholars of Excellence' will be awarded at the end of the year purely on merit, he said.

Menon said graduates with two years' work experience could follow the Post Graduate Program (PSB) in Management which offers learning opportunities by converging business fundamentals with Advance learning necessary to be a successful business leader. Professional qualifications such as CIMA, CIM, ACCA and FCA will be recognised for admission.

Menon will address a joint seminar with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce for Management Professionals on "Business Marketing Strategies and Tactics" on July 15 at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo.

Director, Placements Shalini Sethi said for the second consecutive year the ISB set new benchmarks in domestic and international offers for placements in 2005. The ISB recorded $181,000 (INR 81 lakhs) as the highest international offer. This is comparable with offers drawn by Ivy League graduates.

"Overall, ISB graduates have attracted a high standard of international offers this year. Eight students received offers in the $130,000 to $181,000 range. The offers came from leading multinationals such as BP, Deutche Bank, DBS Bank, Goldman Sachs, Marakon Associates, Mettal Steel and Novartis.

For the first time, this year several Indian corporations made international offers. Among them were Birlasoft, ITC Infotech, Mindiree Consulting, RPG and Satyam Computer Services. The ISB also recorded the highest Indian CTC of INR 21.1 lakhs.

She said the ISB has consistently raised the bar on placements. The number of offers ISB graduates received this year increased by 26%, with the number of international offers increasing by 55%. Sethi said the ISB has been able to achieve increasingly successful placements for its graduates each year, even with a steady 30% increase in batch size year on year.

The ISB's commitment to encouraging gender diversity is reflected in the increasing number of women students in its program. The class of 2005 had 51 women students, 48 of whom participated in the placement process, up from 40, the year before.

The ISB offers corporations a unique opportunity for lateral placements. This concept was pioneered by the institution from its inception to maximise opportunities for students who have an average of five years' experience. This year, lateral placements accounted for almost 97% of the offers, up from 81% last year.

Several graduates have been recruited to senior positions such as Chief Operating Officer, Director Operations and Divisional Heads, she said.

The ISB's growing reputation as a centre for placement excellence has been conformed by the steady increase in the number of corporations coming to the campus for placement interviews each year. The school's facilities include conferencing and high speed data communication networks.

Students interact by computer or video link with faculty, business leaders and students anywhere in the world.

The design of the campus aims to promote a community atmosphere. The recreational facilities to break the rigour of seminars, studies and meeting include a well equipped gymnasium, swimming pool, tennis, basketball, squash courts, football field and jogging tracks all set in scenic surroundings.

The School's Governing Board comprises business leaders, entrepreneurs and academicians from some of the world's leading business and management educational institutions. Its partnership with the Kellogg School of Management, The Wharton School and the London Business School makes the ISB one of its kind in Asia.
