World Rivers on river banks

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

Although it is difficult to define `art' it may be the expression of creativity or imagination or both.

The concept of `what art is' has continuously changed over centuries.

From a wide perspective art is simply generic term for any product of the creative impulse, out of which sprang all other human pursuits.

World Rivers conducted by several artistes from a number of countries is another artistic effort with a novel sense.

It is an art exhibition which is going to be held on selected river banks in several countries. Sri Lanka's great water reservoir River Mahaweli has already been selected as one of the exhibiting places while a young brilliant artist, Chaminda Gamage represents the country at the exhibition. The exhibition is the brainchild of a well-known US artiste Lee Tracy who had conducted a number of solo and group art exhibitions in several countries. According to Tracy the project is still at the early stages and it is still open for participants to join. She also says that her aim is to make some worthy contribution to bring peace on earth.

Only one artiste from a country and 20 more countries have chances to join the project as the organisers expect only 30 applicants. She also said that participants would get an opportunity to unite cultures, customs and their expressions like rivers originating from a separate sources and then flow into to a larger lake or an ocean.

So far Chaminda Gamage from Sri Lanka, Sandra Joran from Australia, R.M. Naeem and Raania Khan Durrani from Pakistan, Stanka Tsonkova from Bulgaria, Sujan Chithrakar from Nepal, Abu Naser from Bangladesh Pratul Das from India, Karina Bergmans from Canada and Kata Sangkae from Thailand, have joined her.

Gamage who represents Sri Lanka is a graduate from the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Kelaniya University and has completed his Masters degree on Mass Communication at the same university. He is a versatile artiste who has held several solo exhibitions on his paintings and also participated in group exhibitions in several countries where he has won many awards. He has also published a poetry book Nelum Pedesa last year.

He always questions man made disasters religion, freedom and mental framework, especially of youth in his art'.

His paintings, installations and performances incorporate contemporary impressions of ancient symbols, icons, and signs.
