TNA welcomes P-TOMS

Welcoming the signing of P-TOMS for the reconstruction of tsunami affected areas in the North and East the TNA said that its success rested upon how expeditiously the Government would implement the plans through appropriate means.

The TNA parliamentarians further stressed that clear explanations had been given regarding the Muslim representation in the memorandum. Therefore the Muslim community should not consider it to be an adverse one for them, they requested. [Thinakural(TK) - 27/06/05].

The Secretary-General of Democratic United Alliance (DUA) Hafeez Nazeer described the memorandum signed between the Government and the LTTE for the P-TOMS as a "charter of enslavement" written upon the Muslim community.

He made this comment in a special meeting held in Colombo to discuss the political future of the Muslim community and on them being left out in the proposals. [Sudar Oli(SOI) - 27/06/05].

It has been alleged that a large scale of lime stones from Valigamam north in the high security zone off Jaffna were being excavated for constructions to expand the Palali airport. It is pointed out that this had posed a threat for environmental preservation. (TK - 27/06/05).

A demonstration took place yesterday in Oorkavaturai, Jaffna insisting the Army forces to leave the areas declared as high security zone.[Virakesari(VK) - 28/06/05].

An employee of 'Elanatham' newspaper published in Batticaloa was shot dead yesterday by unidentified persons at the Mattupola junction in the Ninthavur regional secretary division.The victim K. Arasakumar is the father of three children. (TK - 30/06/05).

Ministry of Housing, Infrastructure and Social Development for the Plantation sector has taken action to fulfil the 3,179 vacancies in the upcountry schools, according to Minister Muthusivalingam. (TK - 30/06/05).

Several well-wishers in the Ratnapura District deplored that few plantations, being abandoned due to scarcity of human resources and reckless attitudes of the management were rapidly turning into jungles. Plantation workers have requested the management and the concerned parties to take necessary action. (TK - 30/06/05).

Thousands of workers from the plantation sector refrained from attending for work in support of the P-TOMS. Several religious activities were also held for the successful implementation of the proposals. (VK - 30/06/05).

The All Universities Muslim Students Union and the Muslim Students Society of the South-East University have jointly come to a consensus to reject the P-TOMS which they think deliberately ignores the aspirations and the equal status of the Muslims. (SOI - 02/07/05).

"There is a power struggle going on among the politicians in the South. They focus more on this competition. They do not seem to be concerned about the problems of the Tamils", accused the LTTE political leader S.P. Thamilchelvan yesterday. He said this, addressing a summit held in Kilinochchi.(VK - 02/07/05).
