Casuals made permanent

At least 1600 workers presently employed at numerous Government approved projects countrywide in casual, temporary and contract categories will be made permanent along with the 32,000 employees in the public sector institutions, Corporations and the Statutory Boards.

The 32,000 workers were made permanent by the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry with effect from July 01.

It was reported that the Cabinet Paper, which was presented by Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda in this regard was duly approved by the Cabinet on June 01.

Minister Dodangoda said that employees in the above job categories who completed a consecutive 180 days working period by June 30 were made permanent under this special scheme. The Minister also said that the workers who were authorised to work in projects on the directive of any Ministry with an official appointment letter will also be made permanent under this scheme.

According to the statistics a large number of project officers, computer operators, education instructors, trained teachers, technical officers, advisors are presently employed in various projects running under the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Plan Implementation, the Social Service Department, the Agriculture Department, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

"All workers, made permanent under this scheme will be entitled to pensions, medical benefits and privileges as enjoyed by all other 800,000 public servants in the country," he said.
