Mega housing project in Eastern Province by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya A mega housing project with 1,200 houses for the benefit of the tsunami victims has been launched in the Eastern Province by the SOS-an Austrian service organisation. Already a few houses have been completed and handed over to the victims at Komari at a simple ceremony held with Dr. Stressor, a former Austrian Minister for Interior, along with Dr. Iris Ansinger and George Bittner Buddenbrock-Austrian Counsellor, who were on a special mission accompanied by local officials. Dr. Stressor's visit was for the purpose of assessing how effectively the Austrian aid was reaching the victims and also to hand over the completed few houses among the victims. SOS children's villages National Director Cedric de Silva, received the guests and invitees. At the outset Dr. Stressor conveyed the greetings from his country and its people. He said the recent undertaking was to put up 750 houses for the victims at Komari and further 365 houses at Kayankeri, along with a school in Kalmunai and several projects in the South and East. He said it was evident that the founder of the SOS Dr. Hermann Gmeiner and his successors around the world have a mission and vision towards the children and the people who were in need. Meanwhile the 18th International celebrations of the SOS was held with hundreds of children and youth at the SOS village here on a grand note, with Nuwara Eliya Mayor Chandanalal Karunaratne as the chief guest. |
