Somawansa thanks SLFPers for preferential votes

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

JVP Leader Somawansa Amerasinghe accepted that most of JVP candidates bagged the highest number of preferential votes at the last general election because of the assistance of SLFP members and supporters. Amerasinghe who thanked the SLFPers at the same time invited them to join with the JVP to form a new alliance.

Once self-exiled JVP Leader speaking at the Annual Convention of the Party's branch representatives at the Town Hall premises last Wednesday said that they had already begun the process for a new alliance as an alternative between the SLFP and the UNP.

He also said that even some Muslim party representatives had consented to work with them and the forum was open for all patriots in the country.

According to Amerasinghe the country's dignity has been belittled before a terrorist organisation for the first time in the history, with the signing of the Tsunami Relief Council MoU. However, at the same meeting, Party Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa said that it was the second betrayal.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the UNP had forgotten its mission to the general public. Its leadership only dreamt about the Presidential election. Silva vowed that they would not allow the UNP to win at a presidential election. He also said that the SLFP had not committed the sin of betraying the country until the signing of P-TOMS.

Politburo member Anura Kumara Dissanayake proposed four resolutions which were all carried by the party members.

Those were (a) make powerless the TRC MoU (b) Accept the JVP's departure from the Government (c) Work for a JVP led patriotic national front and (d) Contest any forthcoming election alone. JVP Politburo members Nandana Gunathilake, Vijitha Herath and several others also spoke.
